The Western Suburbs Triathlon Club was formed in 1983 at the instigation of Ron Yates, a Hawaiian Ironman pioneer, to provide a supportive structure for athletes on the Western side of Melbourne.
Affiliated with Triathlon Victoria since the club’s inception, the membership base of the club has always been strong. The club has been one of the biggest clubs in Victoria for many years. Membership is diverse with members from all over the globe. A number of ‘foundation members’ are still actively involved in the club.
Since the early days of the sport one of the main aims of the club was to provide opportunities for members to race as often as possible. This commitment continues to form the major focus of the club with our monthly races held all year round. Now that so many races are on the calendar, our races provide an economical way to get in hard racing miles from as little as $15.
Since 1983 the club has held in excess of 300 races on the Altona foreshore area which provides one of the fastest and safest race venues anywhere. This multi-lap course provides athletes and spectators with many opportunities to see one another during the race. Distances are: Long Course 750m swim, 18.75km bike, 5km run and Short Course 400m swim, 12.5km bike, 3km run (held concurrently) for the triathlons. For Winter duathlons distances are: Long Course 5km run, 18.75km bike, 5km run and Short Course 3km run, 12.5km bike, 3km run.
The club’s season is broken down into two race series (up to 6 triathlons in Summer and up to 6 duathlons in Winter). In addition, we’ve recently begun holding junior races. The races carry points towards an overall standing for Club Champion. Trophies are also awarded to age categories for each gender.
With a variety of membership types to suit individuals, students and families, the club can cater to all needs.
WSTC 25th Anniversary Crest
To commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the club’s incorporation year (1984), a WSTC Crest was designed. The crest features three fronds from the pines that line the Esplanade to symbolise triathlon in Altona. They form a modern interpretation on the laurel wreath of the Greek Olympics. Silvery green colours fading into our corporate blue signify our Silver Anniversary.
